"the pale rider"

i gonna try to tell this story as quick and as accurate a i can possibly remember,

friday night jan 20,
i have no gig,
so i'm chillin at the house,
the phone rings,
it's jacob hooker, it's his first night off after 12 straight (12-12's, that means 12 hours a day for 12 days straight)
says he just got his old truck running, and wants to know if i want to go for a spin,

so i check with boss, the boss says it's cool,

hooker shows up about 7,
brings an old jam box in the house and fills it up with new batteries, tells me to get some tunes, so i grab a fred eaglesmith cd and we split,

the pale rider is a 1982, white, short wide, chevy, that belonged to the late justin hooker, (jacobs dad)

inside the pale rider is a case of natural light and a 5th of kd, and a guitar, things not needed for a short spin

so we start riding these old country roads out around my house, which i might add can go forever, and all of the sudden we pass an unmarked police car, you know the white crown victoria with the big lights on the mirrors, and the lights in the grill, and the black walls out,

so after we round a corner, hooker stands on it, trying to put some space between them and us, sliding all over the gravel road, i'm holding the jam box so it won't skip, fred's singing spookin the horses, i'm scared shitless, hooker says "if you can ride it, i can guide it" then ...boom

back left tire,

now this happened close to deport, and that's hooker's old stomping grounds, so he makes one call and we get a 4 way, at least we had a spare in the pale rider

short time,
back on the road,

hooker says he knows where a little picking party is in minter, so there we go, it was a very cool old barn, and i knew a lot of the players, and those that i didn't know, knew my dad, and one said he used to come to my house when i was a kid and jam with my dad...he said they always sent me to bed

well we finally get away, and hooker says he wants to buy me some grub, it's already midnight, so i thought to myself ( how mad will another 30 minutes make her?) so we go towards the allnight cafe in paris

now the bellys full and we head back to my house, cruisin down the road and...boom

back right tire blows,

then i see a highway patrol crossing the street right in front of us, we were trying to make it to the nearest gas station on the rim, and we did, but when i told hooker to be cool because there was a highway patrol, the truck jerks a little and the passenger side mirror clips a mail box,
i'm still holding the jam box,

we make the station, call wesely joe, he arrives about an hour later, i arrive home about 3 am

damn it hooker

we survived,

played at babe's in krebs oklahoma last night (lp was right)

we pull in the parking lot, and hooker says "hell yes! my kinda dive"

had a really good crowd,
everybody seem to listen,
a few even bought some cd's,
met the owner,
name is floyd,
he slipped me some cash,
said he like to have me back,
i look at the cash,
i said i like to come back,

thanks to my old buddy ron leonard for the hook up on that one

i got the coolest complement i think i've ever gotten,
there was this nice older lady sitting in the corner, listening and clapping to every song, she came up to me after the show.... and tells me she thinks i've got an old soul,

her name was valerie

i'm standing at the end of the bar, in dillions on friday night , talking to a friend of mine and listening to miles from nowhere, when i see this dude come through the door, dude looks real familiar, but i have to take... 2 takes

and sure enough, it's my good buddy shad blair, and he's got everything he owns outside in his truck, he just left cashville and came back home,

so needles to say we had us a killer night, mfn played first and put on a hell of a show, then we got up and did our thing, i had shad join us on a few tunes, the place was packed, i thank everybody for coming out, we had a minor problem the day before the gig, we were double booked with farris and booth, but we worked all that out...it's easy working out the bs when your working with good dudes, i appreciate it

last night we played the hangout over in commerce, thanks to anna and ashley we had a real good "listening crowd"

seen a brawl,

today i might need a gun,
or maybe just hooker and a knife,
i'm headin in to oklahoma here in a few hours to play a solo gig a joint called babe's,
in krebs, i think, i thought it was kribs but lane informed me it was krebs, (what does he know he spilt jack daniels all the way home last night, but at least he spilled it out of the bottle and not himself)

tonight since your not going to krebs, listen to www.dallaslive.net it might be www.dallaslive.com but a t 7:00 our show from hanks last week will be on, check it out and let me know what it sounds like.

alright then

"[DESTINY] is a feeling you have that you know something about yourself nobody else
does. The picture you have in your own mind of what your about will come true. It's a kind of thing you kinda have to keep to your own self, because it's a fragile feeling, and you put it out there, then someone will kill it. It's best to keep that all inside."

Mr. Bob Dylan said that

5 gigs the next 7 days... hit the year running

i said that
